On Christmas day, 1837, Brigadier
General Abraham Eustis led a large
force of over 2000 troops, 1000
horses and 70 wagons to a point
close to the St. John’s River on
Christmas day, 1837.
An 80-foot square fort was built in a week out of palmetto logs,
palisaded with two blockhouses, one on each corner. Two
companies of troops were garrisoned in the fort when it was
completed. 1842 marked the end of the Second Seminole War,
which led to the abandonment of the fort.
Despite the fact that the original site is no longer present, there
is now a replica of it about a mile south of its original position.
