Make your own
Rose Oil
Selecting Your
Roses
Choose roses that are free
of chemicals or pesticides,
especially if you'll be using
the oil or water in a food
product.
How To Make Rose Oil:
1. In a saucepan, bring a few inches of water to a boil, then remove from the heat.
2. Pour a cup or so of oil into a glass jar. To avoid competing with the roses, choose an oil with little natural odor. A
good choice is jojoba or grapeseed oil, but olive oil (the lighter kind) will also work.
3. Put a cup of crushed or shredded rose petals in the oil. Keep swirling the jar to coat the petals, but do not shake it.
4. Place the jar in the hot water and cover it. Warming the oil will help release the rose petals' scent. As soon as the
water cools, place the jar on a warm window sill.
5. For at least 24 hours, leave the jar in a warm place.
6. Using a cheesecloth, strain the oil, pressing the petals to extract as much oil as possible.
7. Repeat steps 1-6 with fresh petals if you want a stronger-smelling oil. The process may need to be repeated 5 or 6
times to achieve the desired scent.
8. Use a dark bottle with a lid to store clear oil (the dark glass will keep sunlight out and make the oil more stable).
